Gareth Freeman - Top five transfer flops in the Premier League

There have been some truly shocking purchases in the Premier League this season but I think I’ve pin-pointed who the worst five are. Without further ado, I’ll just dive right in.
1. Fabricio Coloccini, Newcastle
When you pay £10million+ for a centre-half you expect pure quality. Unfortunately for Newcastle fans they didn’t get that with Coloccini and his performances below par all season. As an Argentinean international you would expect so much more but this frizzy haired flop has brought nothing to the Newcastle team.
2. David Bentley, Tottenham Hotspur
The next David Beckham? Not this season anyway. To be fair to Bentley he has been played out of position a bit but his performances have been shocking and considering Spurs paid Blackburn £15million for his services I think it is fair to say he has been a waste of money.
Bentley can’t even get in the team when Aaron Lennon is injured and it looks almost certain he will be playing his football elsewhere next season.
3. Dave Kitson, Stoke
The ginger haired former Reading striker became Stoke’s record signing last summer when they paid £5.5million to bring him to the Britannia Stadium. It didn’t work out for Kitson at Stoke and he was quickly loaned back to Reading in January without scoring a single goal for the Potters.
4. Nigel de Jong, Manchester City
This may be a bit harsh as he only joined City in January but so far the Dutchman has offered very little to the Man City team. They paid a massive £18million for him in January but they could have waited until the summer and paid a paltry £1.8million, based on his performances since his move it seems a safe Premier League bet that this would have been the better option.
5. Jimmy Bullard, Hull City
Again possibly a little harsh but so far Bullard hasn’t even played 45 minutes for the Tigers. He suffered a knee injury in his first match that ruled him out for the rest of the season, and probably the start of next. To top it all Hull smashed their transfer record and spent £5million on Bullard and are paying him massive wages.

Gareth Freeman - Premier League new boys: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Midlands club Wolverhampton Wanderers or ‘Wolves’ were the first club to achieve promotion out of the Championship this season by winning the league. It has been five years since Wolves graced the Premier League and represents a massive achievement for manager Mick McCarthy, who has previously been in charge of Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland.At the start of the season Wolves were definitely not the favourites to get out of the league. Birmingham, Reading and Sheffield United all have, on paper, stronger squads and McCarthy’s aim at the start of the season was to get the Wanderers into the play-offs and winning the league was truly a massive bonus for the Wolves boss. Staying in the Premier League next season will be no easy task for Wolves. They haven’t really got the money to splash out on top-quality players but the squad does need a lot of improvement if they are to stay in the league. This means McCarthy will have to be shrewd in the transfer market and maybe take a risk or two by picking up some youngsters and players with potential from the lower leagues.They do have a couple of players in their squad who I think are good enough for the Premier League already. Michael Kightly is a decent winger and he has been linked with Premiership clubs in the past, he has pace and skill on the ball and should adapt to top-flight football fairly easily. The backbone of any good team is a quality goalkeeper and Wolves have one in the shape of Wayne Hennessey, who has also been linked with moves to bigger sides but looks likely to stay and play for the Wolves in the Premier League. Former Hearts defender Christophe Berra is another quality player and although McCarthy needs to add to his squad he doesn’t need to make wholesale changes, just add a bit of quality and strength in depth.It will be hard for Wolves next season but I see no reason why they can’t upset the football odds and emulate clubs that have gone up and stayed up before, like Stoke City who find themselves in mid table this season. They will need a few more players and a bit of luck but in McCarthy they have a manager who has been at the top level before and knows what it takes to keep a club in the Premier League, despite one disastrous season at Sunderland a few years ago.

After the 27th matchday, Rubin became champions for the first time in history.

Football Club Lyn Oslo is a Norwegian professional football club and a department of the sports club Ski- og Fotballklubben Lyn, whose members also participate in nordic skiing and orienteering. They are based in the city of Oslo and play their home games at Ullevaal Stadion.
Established in 1896, they were founding members of the Norwegian Football Association, and have won the League Championship twice and the Norwegian Cup eight times. The club's most recent period of success was during the 1960s, when they won four trophies and reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup. Lyn currently play in the Norwegian Premier League, having won promotion in 2000. They are managed by Kent Bergersen, who took over in September 2008, following the resignation of Henning Berg. The westside club Lyn has traditionally been perceived as representing the upper and middle classes, whereas the eastside club Vålerenga was seen as belonging to the workers. Although Oslo still maintains an east-west divide in social demographics, the divide is now much weaker in the clubs' supporter bases.

Bayern is one of three professional football clubs in Munich. Bayern's main local rival is TSV 1860 Munich, who were the more successful club in the 1960s, winning a cup and a championship. 1860 have since moved between the first and second divisions. 1860 are often referred to by sections of the Bayern support as "gymnasts", insinuating a lack of footballing pedigree. The rivalry has, at least from a Bayern point of view, lost importance over the last decade, reflecting the lopsided state of the achievements of the two clubs and the absence of players for whom local grudges would still matter. 1860 is considered more working-class, and therefore suffers from a diminishing fan base in a city where the manufacturing sector is declining whilst tertiary industries are booming.

Gareth Freeman - Unsung heroes of the Premier League

The Premier League has plenty of well-known faces and players respected by the world of football. Some of the world’s brightest stars such as Cesc Fabregas, Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres grace the English game but there are plenty of players who perhaps don’t get the credit they deserve. With that in mind I’ve decided to run through my top five ‘Premier League unsung heroes’.

James Milner, Aston Villa
Milner is still a young player but seems to have been around forever. He made his debut for Leeds United at the tender age of 16 and has been consistently playing in the top-flight ever since. Milner moved to Newcastle where he quickly established himself in the starting eleven before moving to Aston Villa at the beginning of the current campaign. It has been over the course of this year that Milner’stalent has truly been seen, though he is often overshadowed by the performances of Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor. Milner has been in great form all season and scored a wonder goal against Everton from a free-kick last weekend.

Abdoulaye Faye, Stoke City
At the start of the season Stoke were football favourites to go down with the majority of football pundits and punters alike. They are on the verge of achieving the unthinkable in Premier League survival and this is largely due to their towering defender Abdoulaye Faye. The Senegalese international began his Premier League career with Bolton, where he made over 50 appearances for the Lancashire side. When Sam Allardyce swapped the Reebok Stadium for St James’ Park Faye was the only player he took with him to his new club. After just one season at Newcastle he was sold to Stoke for a fee of around £2million. At Stoke Faye has become a hero and is probably going to be named their player of the season this year, he has almost single-handedly turned their defence into a formidable unit and has chipped in with three vital goals for the Potters.

Danny Murphy, Fulham
Danny Murphy began his career at Crewe, where Dean Ashton, Rob Hulse and David Platt also started out. He sealed a move to Liverpool in 1997 and quickly established himself alongside Steven Gerrard in midfield. After making over 150 appearances for the club he moved on after being deemed surplus to requirements but his career continued to flourish elsewhere. He played a major part in Fulham’s Premier League survival last season and has perhaps been their star this season, where Fulham have got to the brink of European qualification. He may not be the most flash player in the league but Murphy is consistent and always puts in a decent display for Fulham.

Gary Cahill, Bolton Wanderers
23-year-old Cahill is the heart of Bolton’s defence and is a major factor in the Wanderers staying out of the relegation dog-fight this season. He is great in the air, has brilliant awareness and is very good on the ball for a centre-half. He was overlooked by Fabio Capello in the most recent England squads but should break into the national side in the near future. One thing is for sure though, Bolton would really struggle without Cahill shoring up the back.

Antonio Valencia, Wigan Athletic
Wigan have been pushing for European qualification all season and a big reason for this is the talented Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia. The talented 23-year-old has notched up six goals for the Latics this season and is always a handful for the opposition defence. It looks as if Valencia could be set to leave the JJB Stadium in the summer, with Real Madrid among his reported suitors, but Valencia turned down a move in January because he wanted to see the season out with Wigan. In a world where football is dominated by money this kind of loyalty has to be applauded and I’m sure Valencia will be a world famous name in the near future.

Gareth Freeman - The Top Three strikers in World Football

This is my own personal run-down of the top three strikers in world football. I’ve decided to represent three different clubs as well so there will not be two strikers from the same club in the list, otherwise Barcelona might occupy all three places! In no particular order, here are the three most effective forwards in the world at this moment.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Inter Milan
Ibramhimovic is one of the top earners in football and having seen his exploits on the pitch you can understand why. The Swedish international has an astonishing goals-to-games ratio and has nettedover 50 times for Inter in 80 appearances. He began his career at Swedish side Malmo before moving to Dutch giants Ajax where he achieved international recognition. Following a bust-up with Ajaxteam-mate Rafael Van der Vaart Zlatan moved to Serie A side Juventus and began his Italian career, in 2006 he moved to Inter Milan in a mega-money move and quickly established himself as their star player.
He has already won two league titles with Inter and is all set to take a third this season. Zlatan is so highly rated by Inter coach Jose Mourinho that Mourinho has even claimed he is "the best player in theworld, ahead of (Cristiano) Ronaldo". Zlatan’s suberb control, ferocious shot and awareness of the game make him a force to be reckoned with and most would agree he is the best striker in the Italian league.
Didier Drogba – Chelsea
Didier Drogba’s £24million+ move from French side Marseille to Chelsea raised a few eyebrows at first but after nearly five years at the club those initial doubts have been all but forgotten. The Ivory Coastinternational is one of the most effective strikers in the Premier League and he has notched up over 50 goals in around 130 appearances in a Chelsea shirt. The big frontman is so important to the Chelseaside that generally when he plays well, the whole team plays well and vice-versa, when he is having an off-day, it is a safe football bet to make that Chelsea do as well. Though perhaps not as naturally gifted in terms of skill as Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney or Liverpool’s Fernando Torres, Drogba makes up for this with his physical attributes. His ability to win the ball in the air is second to none and he plays the way a classic Englishforward should do – with pace and power.

Despite the wealth of attacking talent the Premier League has to offer Drogba is perhaps the most respected of all the strikers in the league due to his wicked shot, aerial ability, pace and power.
Thierry Henry – Barcelona
Henry first rose to prominence with French side Monaco where he was initially used by then Monaco boss Arsene Wenger as a left-winger. His form for the Ligue 1 club earned him a move to Italian outfitJuventus. After a disappointing spell in Italy where Henry found it hard to adjust to the style of play he moved to Premier League club Arsenal and linked up again with Wenger. It was at Arsenal whereHenry was first utilized as a striker and he has become one of the best in the business since his move to a centre-forward role. Henry has won nearly everything there is to win in football, the World Cupand European Championship at international level and everything there is to win in England.

At his current club, Barcelona, Henry has the chance to win his first La Liga title and perhaps his first Champions League winner’s medal. He was a runner up in 2006 with Arsenal. Despite not playing as a traditional striker with the Frenchman frequently running down the wing and dropping deeper Henry has an astonishing goal ratio. In just over 250 appearances for Arsenal he notched up 174 goals and became the club’s record goal scoer. At Barca and internationally his record is close to one in two, which is still a phenomenal strike rate. For his pace, skill, touch, crossing ability, shot accuracy, and ability to take set-pieces, Henry had to make the list and for me Henry is not just one of the best strikers of the modern game, he may well be one of the best ever to play the game.

Although most national teams worldwide represent an independent state, the four home nations which form the United Kingdom are each represented separately in international tournaments.England is one of the more successful footballing teams, being one of only seven countries to ever win the FIFA World Cup, which they did in 1966 when they hosted the finals. They defeated West Germany 4-2 in extra time in the Final. Nevertheless, they remain a prominent team on the global stage, rarely dropping outside of the top ten rankings of both FIFA and Elo. They were the most successful of the Home Nations in the British Home Championship with 54 wins (including 20 shared wins) before the competition was suspended in 1984.Traditionally, England's greatest rivals have been Scotland, who were their opponents in the first-ever international football match in 1870. Since regular fixtures against Scotland came to an end in the late 1980s, other rivalries have become more prominent. Matches with Argentina and Germany have produced particularly eventful encounters. England's home ground is Wembley Stadium in London.

Hamburger SV can trace its roots as far back as the September 29, 1887 merger of Der Hohenfelder Sportclub and Wandsbek-Marienthaler Sportclub to form Sports Club Germania. The current club was formed as Hamburg Sport-Verein in 1919 through the union of three city teams severely weakened by World War I: Sports Club Germania; Hamburg FC (1888); and FC Falke (1906). The club colors were the Hanseatic red and white in honor of the City of Hamburg, with the blue and black of the oldest of the founding clubs, Germania, being used on the team crest. It is through Germania that HSV can lay a claim to being the oldest team in the country. Associazione Calcio Milan, commonly referred to by the abbreviation AC Milan or simply Milan, is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy.
